Easter Sunday Snow in Albuquerque

Easter Sunday snow in Albuquerque is unusual, but after 153 days of no measurable precipitation, we were due for some moisture. We are well into spring and have already had one or more 80-degree days, but the forecast for Saturday said “rain/snow mix,” and that is exactly what we got for hours here in town. There was also a freeze warning for this morning, and we had that, too.

My normal Saturday adventure run was postponed because of the weather, but I was rewarded with a winter wonderland in the Sandia Mountain Foothills. I drove the 10:00 to the Michael Emery Trail parking lot, parked, and started heading east toward the Sandias, which were beautifully snow-covered. The trails were beautifully clear in the beginning, but as I continued to head east and up there were more and more sections on the trail with snow in the shade. I did a loop, and at the easternmost top of the loop, the snow had probably been about 4″ earlier. I checked and there was 6-12″ at 10,000’+ on the crest.

Some of the sights range from a reminder at the beginning to a spectacular view of two ridges at the end.
