It’s March 26th, 2025 and this run took me to the Albuquerque LDS Temple again. The run started on Paseo east of Ventura in Albuquerque and headed east on Paseo toward the Sandia Mountains. I turned south on Holbrook and then looped around the open space west of Eubank and next to the Albuquerque LDS Temple.
I was privileged to be part of the construction of the Temple from the day that the land was dedicated by President Hinckley to the day that it was dedicated and closed to non-members of the Church. Here is more about its story.
The Albuquerque LDS Temple: A Symbol of Faith in the Southwest
Nestled against the backdrop of the Sandia Mountains, the Albuquerque New Mexico Temple stands as a beacon of faith and devotion for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dedicated on March 5, 2000, by President Gordon B. Hinckley, this sacred edifice serves as the first and only LDS temple in the state of New Mexico.
A Unique Southwestern Design
The Albuquerque Temple reflects the beauty and heritage of the Southwest. Its exterior is clad in white granite, and the design incorporates subtle regional influences, blending harmoniously with the natural surroundings. The temple’s single spire, topped with a golden statue of the angel Moroni, reaches toward the heavens, symbolizing a connection between the divine and the faithful.
A Place of Worship and Service
Like all LDS temples, the Albuquerque Temple is not used for regular Sunday worship but is dedicated to sacred ordinances such as eternal marriages, baptisms for deceased ancestors, and personal covenant-making. For Latter-day Saints in New Mexico and surrounding areas, it serves as a spiritual refuge, offering peace, inspiration, and a place to strengthen their relationship with God.
Community and Impact
Since its dedication, the Albuquerque Temple has been a source of joy and spiritual enrichment for members of the Church. It has also become a point of interest for visitors who admire its striking architecture and peaceful gardens. The temple’s presence in Albuquerque reflects the growing and vibrant Latter-day Saint community in the region.
Whether viewed from the foothills or visited up close, the Albuquerque New Mexico Temple remains a cherished landmark of faith, service, and devotion. It stands as a testament to the belief that temples are, as Latter-day Saints affirm, truly “the house of the Lord.”
